City considers hiring lobbyist to fight for prison
City considers hiring lobbyist to fight for prison
Over the past few months, we’ve heard a lot about the Pontiac Correctional Center and this month is no exception. At Monday night’s Pontiac City Council meeting, Mayor Scott McCoy mentioned the idea of hiring a lobbyist to help in the fight to keep the prison open. McCoy says something needs to be done to stop the prison from shutting down. Many council members said they were on board with the idea and a special city council meeting will be held next Monday, August 11 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the issue. The following night, the state will hold the hearing on the future of the Pontiac Correctional Center at 5 p.m. in the Pontiac Township High School Auditorium. Next Tuesday’s hearing will include testimony from legislators, local elected officials, representatives from AFSCME, economic development groups and those in healthcare and education. State Senator Dan Rutherford says it’s important that there’s a large turnout to make sure leaders understand how a closing would affect the area.
