Todd Lowery’s winter grilling tips

We mentioned on the show this morning we were going to cap off our anniversary with a little cookout. This picture was taken this afternoon behind the WJEZ studios. Grilling in winter you ask? Actually, it’s not that hard if you know how to adapt. What are some tips you should remember?

Even though it has been a mild winter you still have to factor in cold conditions.

1.) Gas grills won’t have this problem, but if you use charcoal like me give the fire plenty of time to burn and heat up. The cold air slows this process down a great deal.

2.) Use a covered lid approach. This will help maintain the heat levels during the winter.

3.) You might want to grill things using indirect heat. That way you can cover and leave it for longer intervals and not freeze to death standing outside.

4.) If you are toasting buns or bread remember to keep them in the package until you are ready to put them on the grill for toasting. The cold air will dry them out if they sit exposed too long before preparation.

So there you have it. Now beat the winter food blahs and grill something!
