WASHINGTON – Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) released the following statement after introducing H.J. Res. 33, an Authorization for Use of Military Force that would grant the President of the United States the power to fully execute the role of Commander-in-Chief:
“A war powers resolution from Congress should recognize the president's authority as Commander-in-Chief and provide the resources necessary to defeat an enemy determined to destroy us. War strategy requires flexibility, and Congress should not tie this and future presidents' hands at a time when the ISIS threat is growing even more powerful and dangerous.
“That’s why today, I introduced an Authorization for Use of Military Force that removes the restrictions the President’s current proposal places on his and future presidents' ability to execute their role as Commander-in-Chief.
“It is time for the President to be a leader and act decisively. He needs to stand up to his own party and say, ‘I'm the Commander-in-Chief. I'm coming to Congress for your support, and this is what I need to win the war.’”
