Concussions for Illinois athletes now have health protocols the must follow and meet before returning to a sport due to a bill that has shed a light of safety on the issue.
State Representative Christian Mitchell said kids who are coming in with concussions into the emergency room are 10 to 14 years old. That’s the biggest growing group that has them.
Mitchell is the sponsor of a bill that directs school districts to set up return to play and return to learn protocol for young athletes diagnosed with concussions.
Mitchell, a boxer, said he knows firsthand that it takes a professional to determine whether you are a concussion victim or if you simply have had your bell rung.
The bill has passed the House, now head to Governor Bruce Rauner.
