Marsy’s Law Passes Illinois Senate

By Cynthia Grau/WJEZ News

Marsy’s Law, an implementation bill for the Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights constitutional amendment passed the Illinois Senate recently with a unanimous vote of 59-0.

This amendment reconciles the 1993 Rights of Crime Victims and Witnesses Act with the Constitutional Crime Victims’ Rights Amendment adopted by voters in November 2014.

New procedures include giving victims a written notice which will contain a checklist of their guaranteed rights, establishing necessary procedures for the assertion and enforcement of victims’ rights and establishing parameters for remedies if a victim’s right is violated.

This amendment is modeled after Marsy’s Law in California. Visit marsyslawforillinois.org for more information.
