Library Tax Levy Discussed

Pontiac Illinois

The Pontiac City Council met last night and discussed a library tax resolution and a solution to the issues with the recycling containers at the Public Works Garage on the east side of Pontiac.

Pontiac City Administrator Bob Karls explained the library tax levy isn’t new and will not increase taxes for people in Pontiac.

“It’s not a new tax – it’s just a renewal of an old tax,” Karls explained. “There are provisions for what’s called a backdoor referendum, that if there’s enough signatures, it can go on the ballot to see whether or not the public still wants it or not.”

Karls also explained there have been two recycling containers available at the Public Works Garage for some time, which the city made available for people outside the city limits and businesses for recycling. The service has been abused with an excess of dumping non-recyclable materials and the city was looking for a resolution to the situation.

“It is clearly posted recyclables only,” Karls said. “However, the last several months, it has gotten very bad, filled with construction debris, paint, tires, such that for several months now, nothing has been recycled and has gone straight to the landfill.”
