The Casey J. Kohlmeier Memorial Foundation is hosting its first annual 5K Run/Walk tomorrow morning in downtown Pontiac.
Check-in for the race begins at 6:30 a.m. in the parking lot across from the Law and Justice Center.
Kohlmeier’s mother, Keri Jo Schmidt, said she started this foundation to raise awareness of how deadly driving under the influence of alcohol can be. Kohlmeier and his K-9 partner, Draco, were killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver October 30, 2013. His 31st birthday would have been today.
Schmidt said her son loved to be involved with everything and if she could guess the way he would feel when he saw everyone come together for a good cause, he would be thrilled.
“He had no idea how much he impacted the community, because that was the way he was – that was what he did,” Schmidt said. “He always wanted to help everybody and that’s the thing about him. He didn’t think twice about it.”
Money raised through this event will benefit organizations like Special Olympics, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and other charities in which Kohlmeier dedicated his time.
