The sixth annual Brian J. Munz Scholarship was awarded at a recent Fairbury City Council meeting, which gave six students $800 to put toward their education.

The scholarship is in memory of Munz, a firefighter who passed away in 2008.

His parents, Jim and Jeanne Munz, said though his death was tragic, many good things, including this scholarship and the fire safety complex in Fairbury, have come.

“We talked about that a lot. What would Brian want us to do? Brian would be extremely pleased and proud to know first responders, their children and spouses were able to benefit from this,” Jim Munz said.

This year’s winners are Bryson Freehill, Jaycey Vedder, Ryan Schladenhauffen, Heidi Schladenhauffen, Rebekah Kaeb and Laura Larsen.
