Don’t worry – it’s just a drill

If you see emergency crews on the Vermilion River tomorrow, don’t panic.

Enbridge will be performing an emergency response drill near the Illinois American Water Plant on Water Street beginning around 8:30 and is simulating how to take care of the river in the event of an oil leak.

Lara Burhenn, public affairs advisor for Enbridge, said they do this training throughout the year throughout their 1200 miles of pipelines in the Midwest.

“We’re going to have our crews out there going through the steps we would go through in the event of a pipeline leak,” Burhenn said. “Pipeline spills are very rare, but we think it’s very important for us to be prepared and the way we would prepare is to practice the steps that we would go through to respond to a pipeline emergency.”

Burhenn said Enbridge is continuing construction on the terminal directly north of Pontiac and said the company appreciates the patience of the people in the Pontiac area.
