A former employee of Flanagan-Cornell High School pleaded guilty to two felony counts involving theft.
According to a joint press release from the school and the Livingston County State’s Attorney, Shelly Wilson admitted she had taken cash out of bank deposits in July 2011 with the intent of paying it back at a later time.
She was sentenced to the maximum of 48 months probation and the maximum jail sentence of 180 days with the agreement to pay restitution in the amount of $47,257.10, with $500 going to the school to cover its deductible and remainder to be paid to the insurance group that covered the school’s loss.
School Superintendent Jerry Farris said they weren’t able to discuss the situation until the case was resolved, as it was a personnel matter, but he feels, although the situation was unfortunate, justice was served.
“I join the members of our communities, our school board, teachers and students in the disappointment that this happened, but also some satisfaction that justice was served. The entire thing is unfortunate. Because of this, we’ve had to change some of our procedures to avoid this from happening again,” Farris said.
Farris said their insurance covered the majority of the loss.
