Normal West softball is headed to the Class 4A semifinals after a 1-0 win over Lincoln-Way East in the Supersectional game at Marion Kneer Stadium at Illinois State University. The Wildcats face Downers Grove South at 3:00 Friday at East Side Center in East Peoria.
Illinois State University’s Ryan Rutherford is headed to the NCAA Division I National Track and Field Championships after having a couple of disappointing seasons. As a senior this year, Rutherford broke the Missouri Valley Conference Record in the 10,000 meter run, but as a sophomore, but he missed the NCAA Finals. Rutherford will compete in the 10,000 meter run on Wednesday night in Eugene, Oregon.
The CornBelters have a rare second straight day off before beginning a road trip tomorrow at Evansville.
The Cubs won at Philadelphia 6-4 behind eight shutout innings from Jon Lester. Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Dexter Fowler each had three hits for the Cubs. The series continues tonight in a match-up of right-handers, Kyle Hendricks for the Cubs and Jerad Eickhoff for the Phillies.

Kurt Busch was the winner of yesterday’s Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway, conserving fuel down over the final two laps before finishing ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Busch was urged by his team to save fuel and go hard for the win on the final lap.
The doctor who treated Muhammad Ali says the three-time heavweight champ and his family never seriously thought of donating his brain for research. Dr. Abe Lieberman said he didn’t think boxing contributed to Ali contracting Parkinson’s disease but he couldn’t be “a hundred percent” certain. Lieberman was among those who diagnosed Ali with Parkinson’s in 1984.
