While the State of Illinois still struggles to pay its bills, one bill has a lot of eyes on it when it comes to education.
Mark Jontry, regional superintendent of schools for Livingston, McLean, DeWitt and Logan counties, was a guest on a recent community forum and talked about Senate Bill 100, which addresses the procedures with discipline in schools, including in and out of school suspensions.
“It does involve a lot more level of intervention services on behalf of the districts for the student and or the family. One the one hand, it does cause us to look at discipline practices and policies and make sure that we’re continuing to be fair when dealing with kids. On the other hand, it will present some challenges in terms of the number of the steps required to potentially remove a student from an environment or situation that, in the past, result in them potentially having to sit out,” Jontry said.
