The White Sox won their second straight at Boston 3-1 as Chris Sale struck out nine in seven innings to become the big leagues’ first 12-game winner. The series continues tonight at Fenway Park in a match-up of lefties, Jose Quintana for the White Sox and Eduardo Rodriguez for the Red Sox.
Illinois State football coach Brock Spack has promoted assistant coaches Billy Dicken and Dan Clark to co-offensive coordinators. Kurt Beathard resigned from the coordinator and quarterbacks coach last week for family reasons.
Illinois State volleyball’s Ashley Rosch and Illinois Wesleyan track and field’s Jill Harmon have been nominated for the NCAA’s Woman of the Year Award. Both concluded their collegiate careers in the past academic year.
LeRoy’s Matt Chastain and El Paso Gridley’s Shelby Fulk have been named the male and female atheltes of the year at the State Farm Student Athlete recognition banquet which honors the top student athletes in McLean County. Chastain led the Panthers basketball team to a state title and is headed to Loyola. Fulk was an all-conference player in three sports – volleyball, basketball and softball. She plans to play softball at Illinois Wesleyan.
The U.S. men’s soccer team was routed by Number 1 Argentina 4-0 in the semifinals of Copa America.
Another high-profile sports star has pulled out of the Rio Olympics. Rory McIlroy says he will not be competing in the golf tournament in Rio de Janeiro because of concerns over the Zika virus.
