Pontiac’s Emily Grove tied for 10th in the pole vault with an outdoor best 14-9 on Sunday in the Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon. Former Tri-Valley High School distance star Stephanie Brown finished 10th in the 1,500-meter run at the trials.
The Cardinals topped the Brewers 5-1 in Milwaukee as Mike Leake struck out a season-high 10 over seven innings and Randal Grichuk and Matt Adams homered.
The Cubs beat the Pirates 6-5 on a go-ahead single from Kris Bryant in the eighth inning. The Cubs ended a five-game losing streak and head into the All-Star break seven games ahead of the Cardinals in the National League Central.
The White Sox were blanked by the Braves 2-0 as northern Illinois native Mike Foltynewicz held the Sox to five hits in seven innings.
The CornBelters lost 4-1 to the Florence Freedom. The last-place Freedom completed a three-game sweep to cool off the Belters hot streak. CornBelters manager Brooks Carey says he wants better urgency and better at-bats. The Belters head into the All-Star break still in a tight race.
The Chiefs lost 16-6 at Wisconsin as the Timber Rattlers broke open the game with a nine-run seventh inning.
Brittany Lang won the U.S. Women’s Open in a three-hole playoff.
