The Cardinals earned a day-night doubleheader sweep over the Padres, 4-2 and 3-2. Former Padre Jedd Gyorko homered in both games with a pair of big flies and all three RBIs in the opener and went yard for the fifth straight game off Padre pitching.

The series concludes tonight with an earlier start of 6:15. Right-handers Andrew Cashner for the Padres and Adam Wainwright for the Cardinals meet on the mound. Cards network pre-game on AM 1230 WJBC begins at 5:20.

The Cubs beat the Mets 6-2 behind two home runs from Anthony Rizzo. The Cubs took two out of three in the rematch of last year’s National League Championship Series. The Cubs take today off.

The Mariners beat the White Sox 6-5 in 11 innings on a solo home run by Leonys Martin, his second of the game. The Sox send James Shields to the hill as the Mariners counter with Mike Pelfrey in a match-up of right-handers.

The CornBelters split with Schaumburg, taking the opener 5-3 but falling 2-1 in Game 2. The homestand concludes tonight with a 6:35 first pitch and a 6:20 pre-game on WJBC.com.

The Chiefs opened a long road trip with an 11-1 loss at West Michigan.

The Cubs picked up lefty reliever Mike Montgomery from the Mariners for first baseman-designated hitter Dan Vogelbach.

Brad Richards, part of the Blackhawks’ 2015 Stanley Cup championship team, is retiring after 15 years in the NHL. He also hoisted a Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Dale Earnhardt Junior will sit out the next two races with concussion symptoms, so Jeff Gordon will come out of retirement to take Earnhardt’s place at Indianapolis and Pocono.
