The CornBelters broke open a tie game with a four-run seventh inning and beat the host Washington Wild Things 6-2. Charlie Gillies registered 10 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings for the win. The Belters conclude their road trip tonight in suburban Pittsburgh with a 5:50 pre-game on WJBC.com.
The Chiefs won at Quad Cities 8-2.
Illinois State senior Ashley Rosch has been named the Missouri Valley Conference’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, the NCAA announced Wednesday. Rosch is now one of just 54 candidates for the award from the Division I level. The former Illinois State volleyball standout was one of 231 Division I student-athletes nominated for the award. The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.
The Cardinals beat the Mets 5-4 in a back and forth game that saw St. Louis go ahead for good with two runs in the ninth inning on RBI doubles from Yadier Molina and Kolten Wong. Tonight Michael Wacha faces Jose Fernandez with a 5:15 Cards network pre-game on AM 1230.
The Cubs slugged past the White Sox 8-1 with all eight tallies coming in their final three innings. Anthony Ranaudo took the loss in his Sox debut and accounted for the only South Side run with a fifth-inning homer. Addison Russell completed the Cubs scoring with a grand slam in the eighth. Jason Hammel gave up five hits and struck out seven in his seven innings for the win. Chris Sale faces John Lackey tonight in the rematch at Wrigley Field.
