In girls volleyball, Flanagan-Cornell topped Pontiac 26-24, 26-24.
Pontiac boys golf won a triangular over Normal West and Olympia. Pontiac’s Garret Bruner carded a 41 for the top spot while teammate Tony Krominga tied for second with a 42.
In girls tennis, Washington shut out Pontiac 9-0 and Lincoln beat Pontiac 6-3 in a double dual at Williamson Field.
The Cubs’ magic number to clinch the National League Central is now 3 after a 4-1 win over the Cardinals. Kyle Hendricks took a no-hitter into the ninth inning but Jeremy Hazelbaker ended the bid with a solo home run to lead off the frame. The middle game of the series is tonight at Busch Stadium with right-hander Jason Hammel starting for the Cubs against Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia. Cards network pre-game on WJBC-AM 1230 is 6:20.
The White Sox beat the Indians 11-4 as the South Siders scored in every inning, only the 20th time that’s happened. Avisail Garcia matched a career-high four hits including a home run, and Adam Eaton and Todd Frazier also homered for the Sox. Tonight in Chicago, right-hander Trevor Bauer goes to the hill for the Indians against Sox lefty Jose Quintana.
The opening night of Monday Night Football featured two games, but neither were spine-tinglers. The Steelers beat the Redskins 38-16 behind three touchdown passes from Ben Roethlisberger and the 49ers won a chuckler over the Rams 28-0.
The Tennessee Titans have released quarterback Alex Tanney of Lexington. He was in his second stint with the Titans and in his fifth year in the NFL. Tanney was inactive for last week’s opener against the Vikings.
The NCAA has pulled seven championship events out of North Carolina because of the state’s so-called “bathroom law” that some claim can lead to discrimination against LGBT people. The NCAA has issued a news release saying the decision by its board of governors came “because of the cumulative actions taken by the state concerning civil rights protections.”
