The Cardinals are back to one game behind the Giants for the last National League wild card spot. The Cards beat the Giants 3-0 to force a split in the big four-game series. The Cardinals move on to Colorado tonight as they send right-hander Carlos Martinez to the mound against Rockies lefty Tyler Anderson.
The Cubs fell 3-1 to the Brewers for their first home series loss since July. The Cubs remain at Wrigley Field tonight to face the Reds. Right-handers Tim Adleman for the Reds and Jason Hammel for the Cubs go to the hill.
The White Sox lost 10-3 at Kansas City. The series ends this afternoon at Kauffman Stadium with lefty Carlos Rodon taking the ball for the Sox against Royals righty Yordano Ventura.
The Bears host the Eagles in the Monday Night Football contest. It’s the home opener for the Bears.
NFL action from Sunday included the Broncos over the Colts 34-20, the Vikings over the Packers 17-14 to open Minnesota’s new stadium and the Rams over the Seahawks 9-3 in front of 91,000 fans in the first regular season home game for the Rams at Los Angeles Coliseum since 1979. Other NFL winners were the Giants, Carolina, Dallas, New England, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Tennessee, Houston, Arizona, San Diego and the Jets.
Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan women’s soccer both played to scoreless ties, the Redbirds at Northern Illinois and the Titans with WashU. Illinois Wesleyan men’s soccer beat visiting Coe 3-1.
NASCAR Sprint Cup’s playoff Chase opened with Martin Truex Jr. racing to victory after taking a late lead at Chicagoland Speedway.
Alabama remains at Number One in the latest Associated Press college football poll. Ohio State moves up to the second spot. FCS champion North Dakota State didn’t crack the top 25 but received 74 points after knocking off previous Number 13 Iowa.
