The longsuffering is no more. The Cubs have ended a 108-year gap between championships, claiming the World Series title with a Game 7 win over the Indians, 8-7 in 10 innings. Eureka’s Ben Zobrist earned the World Series MVP with his game-winning double in the extra frame. The Cubs built leads of 5-1 and 6-3 until the Indians tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth on a home run by Rajai Davis. Dexter Fowler, Javier Baez and David Ross homered for the Cubs. The Cubs won the final three games to overcome a 3-1 deficit for the first time since the 1985 Kansas City Royals.

 

The Bulls lost at Boston 107-100 for their first defeat of the season.

 

Illinois Wesleyan men’s soccer lost in the CCIW semifinals 3-1 at Carthage. The IWU women were rained out yesterday and host Carroll at 4 p.m. today in their CCIW semifinal.

 

High school volleyball sectional championships are on the line for several area teams. In Class 2A, Eureka faces Monmouth United at Glasford, Dee-Mack takes on Riverton in Beardstown and Tri-Valley meets St. Joseph-Ogden at Argenta. Central Catholic takes on Morton for a Class 3A sectional crown at Metamora while Normal Community faces Edwardsville for the Class 4A sectional title in Chatham.
Norv Turner has resigned as the Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator after two straight losses to follow a 5-0 start.

 

NFL tonight features the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
