Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District’s coloring contest is now underway, with entries due by Friday, December 9.
Kindergarteners can color a special picture that will be provided to them at school and children in grades 1 through 4 can create a placemat to the theme of “Hats Off To Agriculture” to illustrate where their food comes from.
Debbie Ruff, ag literacy coordinator for the District, explains.
“Agriculture is so very important to us and many people don’t realize it. At Thanksgiving – in the schools and when we sit down for Thanksgiving – we almost always tell others something we are thankful for, and one thing I always make sure to mention is I am thankful to live here in Illinois where we have such great resources, but also the great farmers that produce all this food, all our fiber and all our food. We’re just trying to get the kids to think this way, also,” Ruff said.
Ruff also said while county schools have the information for this contest, it’s open to all children in the county no matter whether they attend public or private schools or are home schooled, and more information can be found by calling the District at 844-6127 extension 3.
