The Livingston County Soil and Water Conservation District held its annual meeting Thursday morning and recognized partners in conservation, conservation farm family and also gave service awards.

Chairman Lee Bunting is looking ahead for more work to be done in 2017.

“The Watershed Project and continuing our education program with our education Expo this fall, plus other programs we are working on, getting into the schools, talking about conservation, talking about the protection of our natural resources and making people aware that we are standing in a watershed that is a water supply for Pontiac and Streator, Illinois. We need to maintain good stewardship of our fertilizers and soils so everyone has clean water to drink,” said Bunting.

Guest speaker of the day was Dan Rutherford, who admits being an avid participant of soil and water conservation is a lesser known trait of his to the general public.

“The whole idea of what we individually can do, albeit small, is that each of us can do something. Whenever you have your soda pop can, recycle it. Whenever you have food products left, compost it. I don’t necessarily have a compost pile, but I have a garden I can throw it out into. The idea of recycling, especially if you live in town, can be done. Every little bit helps,” Rutherford said.
