The high school girls basketball season is winding down. In Thursday girls play, U-High beat Prairie Central 58-25, Dwight girls ended the regular season with a 48-45 win over state-ranked Watseka, Fieldcrest earned a 37-26 win over Dee-Mack, El Paso-Gridley topped Tremont 45-22, Beecher knocked off Tri-Point 58-40 and Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland held off LeRoy 48-37.
Boys high school basketball tonight on 98.9 WJEZ features IVC visiting Pontiac at 7:30. The Fighting Illini try to bounce back tomorrow against Minnesota. Pre-game begins tomorrow at 2 on WJEZ.
The second half of the Missouri Valley Conference season begins tonight for Illinois State women’s basketball as the Redbirds host Indiana State in the annual Play-4-Kay game. The Redbirds will honor cancer survivors, host informational displays and wear pink. Fans are invited to join the Redbirds and wear pink tonight to the 7 p.m. game. Admission is $1.
The Illinois State men are at Wichita State tomorrow night in another huge Missouri Valley Conference battle. The Shockers are one game behind the 11-0 Redbirds in the Valley race.
The Bloomington Thunder are at Fargo tonight and tomorrow night.
The CornBelters have announced former Major League player, coach and manager Ryne Sandberg will appear at the Corn Crib on Sunday, May 28. He will serve as honorary manager and coach third base.
The Blackhawks won at Arizona 4-3 to slide within four points of the Western Conference-leading Minnesota Wild. Patrick Kane recorded a goal and an assist.
The Cardinals have agreed to a five-year contract extension for right-handed ace Carlos Martinez worth $51 million. The contract buys out his arbitration years and includes a pair of team options. Martinez is 25. He was 16-9 last season with a 3.04 ERA.
Duke coach Mike Krzyweski says he’ll be back on the bench for tomorrow’s game against Pittsburgh. He’s been out since undergoing back surgery four weeks ago.
