Former Illinois State men’s basketball guard DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell scored a game-high 25 points to lead his team to the Danish Basketball League title. Akoon-Purcell was named the finals MVP. The rookie earlier was named the league’s player of the year.
The Cardinals scored a 6-5 win over the Marlins, coming back from a four-run deficit. Dexter Fowler broke the tie with a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning, and Magneuris Sierra, who was with the Peoria Chiefs last season, singled and scored in the final two frames. It’s the fifth straight win for the Cards. The series continues tonight in Miami with Lance Lynn on the mound for the Cardinals against the Marlins’ Tom Koehler.
The Cubs and Rockies split a doubleheader with Colorado taking the opener 10-4 and the Cubs rebounding for an 8-1 nightcap win. They’ll rematch this afternoon with Kyle Hendricks starting for the Cubs against the Rockies’ German Marquez.
