Illinois’ David Kendziera advanced to the finals in the 110 and 400 hurdles in the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. The 110 finals are tonight and the 400 is tomorrow.
Players arrive on Friday for the state’s high school basketball showcase in Pontiac, the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Games. The small school girls game is at noon Saturday followed by large school girls at 2 p.m., 1A-2A boys at 4 p.m. and 3A-4A boys at 6 p.m., all at Pontiac Township High School. Practices and the banquet are on Friday.
The Cubs’ five-game winning streak ended with a 6-5 loss to the Marlins. The Rockies visit Wrigley Field tonight with right-hander Tyler Chatwood on the mound against Cubs lefty Jon Lester.
The White Sox lost 3-1 at Tampa Bay as Jacob Faria held the Sox to just three hits into the seventh inning in his big league debut. The series concludes tonight with lefty Derek Holland taking the ball for the Sox against right-hander Jake Odorizzi.
The Cardinals have dropped six straight for the first time in four seasons with a 6-4 loss at Cincinnati. The Reds scored five times in the seventh inning to take the lead, capped by a two-run homer by Joey Votto. It’s the fifth time in the six-game losing streak that the Cardinals have given up a lead in the seventh or eighth inning. The series concludes this afternoon at Great American Ball Park as Mike Leake is on the mound for the Cardinals while the Reds counter with Scott Feldman.
The CornBelters won their second straight, 8-5 over Joliet behind a seven-run seventh inning. The series concludes tonight in Joliet as the CornBelters begin a six-game road trip before returning to the Corn Crib next Thursday.
The Golden State Warriors lead the NBA Finals 3-0 after a 118-113 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals is tonight in Pittsburgh with the Penguins and Nashville Predators tied 2-2.
Illinois State freshman outfielder and Central Catholic grad John Rave has been named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-America team. The Bloomington native led ISU in triples and stolen bases.
Illinois State men’s basketball will travel to Nevada in late November in the Missouri Valley/Mountain West Challenge Series. The Wolfpack won the Mountain West crown last season.
Melissa Myers says she’s taking a break from coaching after nine seasons at the helm of Illinois State volleyball. She says she reflected on the hectic pace of Division I coaching particularly after recently losing some family members. Myers leaves Illinois State with the third-most head coaching wins in Redbird volleyball history.
Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops has retired after 18 seasons including 10 Big 12 Conference titles and a national championship.
