The Cubs evened the Crosstown Classic by beating the White Sox 7-2. Willson Contreras homered and drove in four runs for the Cubs.

 

The crosstown series shifts to the South Side tonight. Jake Arrieta starts for the visiting Cubs against the Sox’ James Shields.

 

The Cardinals earned a 3-2 win over the Rockies as Jedd Gyorko drove in Harrison Bader with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bader was making his major league debut and led off the ninth with a double for his first big league hit.

 

The Cardinals have placed pitcher Adam Wainwright and outfielder Dexter Fowler on the disabled list. Wainwright is sidelined by back tightness and Fowler is out because of a strained left wrist.

 

Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty is scheduled to join the Peoria Chiefs for a rehab appearance as he recovers from a groin strain. He could be in the lineup tomorrow night in Peoria.

 

The series continues tonight at Busch Stadium in a pitching match-up of right-handers, Colorado rookie Jeff Hoffman and the Cards’ Carlos Martinez.

 

The CornBelters return to action after two days off, starting a six-game road trip in suburban Pittsburgh with a doubleheader against the Washington Wild Things.

 

Illinois State is picked fifth in the Missouri Valley Football Conference preseason poll. Redbird coach Brock Spack says they’ve been underestimated before when they were picked fifth the year they played for the national championship. Defending Valley co-champions North Dakota State and South Dakota State are picked 1st and 2nd, respectively. The Redbirds begin practice on Monday.
