Your morning look at sports

The Cubs were off on Monday as they prepare to host the Diamondbacks tonight. Lefties Patrick Corbin for Arizona and Jon Lester for the Cubs are on the hill.

The Cubs announced they are giving a 2016 World Series ring to Steve Bartman, the man vilified for deflecting a foul ball with the Cubs needing just five outs to win the 2003 National League Championship Series. Bartman has avoided media attention since then, but he issued a statement saying he is deeply moved by the gesture.

The Cardinals took Monday off before opening a three-game series in Milwaukee this evening. Carlos Martinez takes the ball for the Cards while the Brewers send out Jimmy Nelson. The Cardinals did not make any deals before the trading deadline passed.

The White Sox beat the Blue Jays 7-6 as Matt Davidson recorded his second walk-off hit in a row, a two-out ninth-inning single to score Leury Garcia. The Jays send Marcus Stroman to the hill against Sox right-hander Mike Pelfrey. Top prospect second baseman Yoan Moncado and outfielder Willy Garcia left the game after a collision.

The CornBelters were off on Monday before beginning a six-game homestand tonight. The Evansville Otters are in town for the first three games tonight through Thursday.

Belters starting lefty Scott Sebald was named the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week. He struck out 13 with just one walk and four hits in eight innings on Saturday at Lake Erie, although he did not receive a decision as the Crushers rallied in the ninth inning.

Illinois State men’s basketball apparently has two vacancies on its coaching staff as multiple media reports out of Michigan indicate Luke Yaklich is joining the staff of Wolverine coach John Beilein. That’s only days after new Redbird assistant Deandre Haynes took an assistant’s job in Ann Arbor.

Illinois State senior defensive back Davontae Harris is an FCS Preseason All-American. He was a first team Missouri Valley Football Conference selection last year at cornerback.
