The Diamondbacks defeated the Cubs 10-8 as Paul Goldschmidt hit three home runs, including the go-ahead blast in the ninth inning. The Cubs host the Nationals this afternoon with former Frontier Leaguer Tanner Roark on the mound for Washington against Kyle Hendricks for the Cubs.

 

The Red Sox beat the White Sox 9-5, starting early with seven runs off Chicago starter Miguel Gonzalez before he was pulled in the second inning. The series continues tonight at Fenway Park with a pitching matchup of lefties, Chicago’s Carlos Rodon and Boston’s Eduardo Rodriguez.

 

The Brewers edged the Cardinals 2-1 in a Thursday matinee. Keon Broxton robbed a potential Cardinals home run from Jose Martinez, then drove in the deciding run in the fifth inning. The Cardinals are in Cincinnati for a weekend series with an early 5:40 Central start time for tonight’s opener. Right-handers Mike Leake for the Cardinals and Asher Wojciechowski for the Reds are on the hill.

 

The CornBelters were leading the Evansville Otters 3-0 after one inning when storms hit the Corn Crib. The game will continue when the Belters visit Evansville the week after next. The Belters host the Gateway Grizzlies tonight through Sunday.

 

University of Michigan basketball coach John Beilein officially announced the hiring of two assistant coaches from Illinois State. Beilein announced Friday morning that Luke Yaklich and DeAndre Haynes have joined his staff. Yaklich was on the Redbird staff from 2013 through last season, serving as associate head coach during the last campaign. Haynes joined the ISU staff two months ago and returns to his home state with the move.

 

Illinois State women’s basketball has released its non-conference schedule, which includes six home games. The home opener is November 15 against Northern Kentucky. The season opens at Oakland University in Michigan on November 11. The Redbirds play Eureka College in an exhibition game on November 1.

 

The NFL exhibition season began with the Dallas Cowboys defeating the Arizona Cardinals 20-18 in the Hall of Fame Game at Canton, Ohio.

 

The Bears continue pre-season camp by giving Mitchell Trubisky his first work as second team quarterback. Trubisky was the second pick of this year’s draft and is expected to be the third string QB behind Mike Glennon and Mark Sanchez.
