The Cubs fell 9-4 at Washington. Matt Wieters hit a grand slam that broke a tie during the Nationals’ five-run eighth inning. Willson Contreras homered twice for the Cubs. The Brewers also lost to the Rays to allow the Cubs to maintain a half-game lead in the division. The Cubs are in San Francisco tonight as Jake Arrieta goes to the mound with the Giants giving the ball to Matt Moore.
The White Sox lost 6-3 at Boston as Chris Young homered twice, including a three-run shot to break the tie after the batter in front of him was walked intentionally. The Sox have lost six in a row. The Sox host the Astros tomorrow after taking today off.
​The Cardinals crushed the Reds 13-4 to take two out of three games in the series in Cincinnati. Jose Martinez hit a grand slam during a nine-run fourth inning. The Cardinals are in Kansas City tonight to begin a four-game home-and-home series with the Royals. Carlos Martinez starts for the Redbirds against the Royals’ Ian Kennedy.
The CornBelters beat the Gateway Grizzlies 4-0 to take two out of three in the weekend series. Charlie Gillies threw his third complete game of the season, a four-hit shutout. The Belters are off today before opening a three-game series tomorrow at Southern Illinois.
The Bloomington Bobcats, the Twin Cities’ college summer league baseball team, is playing in the finals of the Midwest Collegiate League. The Bobcats took Game 1 of the best-of-three series against the Southland Vikings 13-11 on Saturday in Chicago Heights. Game 2 is tonight at 7 at Jack Horenberger Field.
Former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has come out of retirement. He’s agreed to a contract with the Miami Dolphins, where he is expected to compete with Matt Moore for the starting job while Ryan Tannehill recovers from a left knee injury that could keep him out all season.
