The Cardinals held off the Royals 8-6. Dexter Fowler hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to put St. Louis up by four, the first time ever that the Cardinals hit go-ahead grand slams in consecutive games. The Cardinals host the Braves tonight with northern Illinois native Mike Foltynewicz on the mound for Atlanta against the Cards’ Adam Wainwright.
The White Sox surged from behind to beat the Astros 3-2. Yoan Moncada tied the game with a homer in the bottom of the ninth and won it with a single in the 11th. The White Sox host the Royals this evening with Danny Duffy taking the ball for KC against Reynaldo Lopez for the South Siders.
The Cubs had Thursday off and begin a series in Arizona tonight. Right-handers square off on the bump, John Lackey for the Cubs and Taijuan Walker for the Diamondbacks.
The CornBelters earned a 5-1 win at Southern Illinois. Scott Sebald allowed six hits over seven innings for the win. The Belters begin a six-game homestand tonight as the River City Rascals visit the Corn Crib.
The Bears lost their preseason opener to the Broncos 24-17. Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was 18 of 25 for 166 yards and one touchdown in his first NFL action.
Former Illinois State track All-American and NCAA champion Christian Goy has been selected for the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame. Goy is the 12th Redbird chosen for the Valley hall.
Illinois Wesleyan football is picked in a tie for third in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin coaches poll. The Titans are tied with Carthage. Wheaton and North Central are picked to finish one-two.
Kevin Kisner and Thorbjord Oleson share the lead after one round of the PGA Championship.
