A pedestrian lost their life in the early hours of Monday morning after being struck by a Pontiac Police Department squad car.

According to a press release from the department, the accident happened about 100 feet north of Howard Street on Route 66 at 1:10 a.m. The female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is being investigated by the Illinois State Police. The officer involved is on non-disciplinary paid administrative leave.

Both the identity of the deceased and the officer are not being released at this time.
