High school football switches on the Friday night lights for the first time this year tonight. The Pontiac-Central Catholic game can be heard on 98.9 FM WJEZ and on WJEZ.com with Marc Strauss on the call from Williamson Field.

The Padres beat the Cardinals 4-3 with two runs in the ninth inning off three St. Louis relievers. The Cardinals begin an interleague series against the Rays tonight, Jake Odorizzi against Michael Wacha.

The Reds topped the Cubs 4-2 by taking the lead in the eighth inning on a double by Jose Peraza. The Cubs open their Players Weekend series at Philadelphia tonight with lefty Jose Quintana on the hill for the Cubs against the Phillies’ Jerad Eickhoff.

The White Sox earned a 5-1 win over the Twins. The Tigers visit Chicago for a weekend series starting tonight with Justin Verlander for Detroit against the Sox’ Miguel Gonzalez.

The Tigers beat the Yankees 10-6 in a game marred by three bench-clearing incidents resulting in the ejections of both managers, a coach and five players.

The CornBelters ended a seven-game road trip with a 7-5 win at Evansville. The Belters broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the ninth inning and had to hold off an Otters rally in the final at-bat in which the hosts scored four times. The Belters host the River City Rascals in the final home games of the season this weekend at 6:35 tonight and tomorrow and 4:35 Sunday. This weekend’s games can be heard on WJBC.com.

In high school volleyball, U-High beat Pontiac 26-24, 25-13. Dwight lost in three sets to Reed-Custer.

The local United States Hockey League entry formerly known as the Thunder is now the Central Illinois Flying Aces. General manager Brendan Kelly says one goal of the new name is to broaden the top tier junior team’s fan base. The new colors and logo will be unveiled next week.
