Illinois State women’s soccer earned its first win of the season, a 2-0 shutout of Illinois.
The Cardinals fell to the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 as Logan Morrison homered for the second time in the game in the 10th inning. The Cardinals take today off before visiting Milwaukee tomorrow.
The Cubs dropped a 6-3 decision to the Phillies. Rhys Hoskins homered for the fifth straight game to lead the Phils, plus started a rare 7-4-3 triple play with a sliding catch in the fifth inning. The Cubs host the Pirates tonight as right-hander Trevor Williams is on the hill for the Bucs against Cubs lefty Mike Montgomery.
The White Sox rolled to a 7-1 win over the Tigers. It’s the fourth victory in the last five games for the South Siders. Matt Davidson led the offense with a three-run homer and Lucas Giolito earned his first big league win with seven scoreless innings. The Sox are off today and are at Minnesota tomorrow.
The CornBelters waited out a two-hour-five-minute rain delay in the season’s Corn Crib finale and walked off with a 5-4 win over the River City Rascals. Craig Lepre singled home Justin Fletcher with the game-winner with one out in the ninth inning. The Belters are now two games out of a playoff spot with six games left, three at Evansville starting tomorrow followed by a three-game weekend set at Florence.
The Bears picked up a 19-7 win over the Tennessee Titans in an NFL practice game, but may have lost wide receiver Cameron Meredith for the season after the former Illinois State Redbird went down with a knee injury in the first quarter.
Dustin Johnson beat Jordan Spieth in a playoff at The Northern Trust.
Japan has won the Little League World Series for the fifth time in eight years with a 12-2 rout of Lufkin, Texas.
