In high school volleyball, Pontiac pulled off a straight-set win over Flanagan-Cornell 25-20 and 25-21. El Paso-Gridley downed Roanoke Benson, Dwight knocked off Tri-Point and GCMS bested Iroquois West.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals return to action tonight to start a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds. The Cards trail the first-place Chicago Cubs by two games in the National League Central. The Cubs host the New York Mets tonight.

 

Jose Abreau had four hits and came one homerun short of his second cycle in the last three games as the White Sox pounded the Kansas city Royals 11-3.

 

Illinois State moved up one spot to number 14 in the FCS Coaches Poll following their bye week. ISU is one of seven MVFC schools in the top 25, including number 2 North Dakota State, number 4 South Dakota State and number 5 Youngstown State. The Redbirds visit Eastern Illinois on Saturday.

 

In Monday Night Football, the Minnesota Vikings topped the New Orleans Saints 29-19. Denver held off the Los Angeles Chargers 24-21.

 

Bears receiver Kevin White will go on injured reserve for the third straight season after suffering a fractured collarbone late in Sunday’s 23-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. That’s the third major injury in three NFL seasons for White. The Bears play Tampa Bay this weekend.
