2017 Vermilion River Cleanup happening Saturday

The 2017 Vermilion River Cleanup Day is back Saturday with good weather and river conditions to pick up where they left off in cleaning up the body of water.

Carolyn Gerwin with the Livingston County Environmental Association said they will supply workers with gloves, a hat and lunch after a day of cleaning debris from the river.

“Basically we meet at 8 a.m. at Play Park where the canoe ramp is in Pontiac. We get people signed up and figure out how many canoes we have. People with canoes are especially welcome to come and bring their canoe. The commandant will assign people a stretch of river and we take them up river and down river, collecting garbage and man-made material as they go. A whole variety of things have been found in the past. One of the big items is tires. The City of Pontiac does provide a dumpster or other disposal services so we don’t have to pay for it. They take care of that and it gets safely disposed of,” Gerwin said.

They are also looking for drivers, people for some land-based cleanup and those with canoes that day.
