In high school basketball last night, Pontiac’s girls fell to Eureka 43-33. Prairie Central fell to Morris 43-30 and Dwight rolled past Grant Park 46-21.

 

At the Lexington Classic, Ridgeview hammed Gardner-South Wilmington 51-22. Lexington lost to Dee-Mack 37-34.

 

At the Stone Seed Classic, host Flanagan-Cornell-Woodland lost to Ottawa Marquette 47-25. Fieldcrest bested Serena 57-46.

 

Illinois State’s women play their home opener under first year coach Kristen Gillespie. ISU hosts Northern Kentucky out of the Horizon League.

 

Illinois Wesleyan’s men play their season opener tonight against Fontbonne.

 

Illinois Wesleyan football coach Norm Eash has been named Coach of the Year in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin for a sixth time after the Titans earned a share of the league title. The Titans also had 13 players named all-conference, including the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, Jordan Hassan. The Titans play Case Western on Saturday in the Division III playoffs.

 

Illinois State football coach Brock Spack isn’t saying who will start at quarterback for the Redbirds in their regular season finale Saturday against North Dakota State. Redshirt freshman Malachi Broadnax made his first career start last week in the loss to South Dakota State after Jake Kolbe started the first nine games.

 

The Diamondbacks’ Torey Lovullo is the National League Manager of the Year. Paul Molitor has won the American League Manager of the Year award after his Minnesota Twins became the first team to make the playoffs following a 100-loss season.
