Illinois led for much of the first half, but a 12-0 Penn State run to start the second half paved the way for the Nittany Lions’ 74-52 win at State Farm Center. The Illini falls to 2-11 in the Big ten, 12-14 overall. The Illini visit Indiana on Wednesday night. We have the Brad Underwood Show tonight at 7.

 

More high school basketball tomorrow night on Classic Hits 98.9 as Pontiac takes on Olympia.

 

The girls small school sectionals get underway tonight, including a 1A sectional matchup at Colfax, where Lexington takes on Cissna Park. Danville Schlarman takes on Decatur St. Teresa in the other matchup. In the Class 3A regionals tonight at Herscher, Pontiac takes on Coal City, then Prairie Central plays Morris.

 

Illinois State went ice cold down the stretch after pulling with two points with seven minutes to go as Valparaiso pulled away to a 74-58 win over the Redbirds. ISU has its four-game winning streak snapped. The Redbirds visit Bradley on Wednesday.

 

The Redbird women had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 75-58 loss at Missouri State. The Redbirds host Indiana State on Friday night.  

 

The United States has come away with a bronze medal in team figure skating during Day 3 of the Winter Games. Mirai Nagasu has become the first American woman and third overall to land a triple axel in the Olympics, accomplishing the rare feat in the women’s free skate at the team competition. American Jamie Anderson won the second gold medal for the U.S. at the Games, taking the women’s slopestyle snowboarding amid blustery conditions.

 

Ted Potter Jr. fired a final round 69 to win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

 

That familiar No. 88 car, driven for years by Dale Earnhardt Jr., now driven by Alex Bowman, won the pole for Sunday’s Daytona 500. 2016 winner Denny Hamlin qualified for second.

 

After being left at the altar by Josh McDaniels, the Indianapolis Colts have hired Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich as their new head coach.
