High school basketball tonight on Classic Hits 98.9 as Pontiac hosts Coal City. Marc Strauss has the call with the tip off at 7:30.

 

To the postseason, Dwight won its opening game in the regional at St. Anne. The Trojans defeated Illinois Lutheran, 55-49, and will play the host Cardinals tonight. In the regional at El Paso, host El Paso-Gridley eliminated Eureka 48-44. In the Class 1A Woodland Regional, Lexington fell to Cornerstone, 66-42.

 

Eureka is headed to the girls basketball state finals. The Hornets girls team held off Pleasant Plaints 54-47 to win the Jacksonville Super-Sectional and advance to the Class 2A semifinals this Friday at Redbird Arena. Eureka will play Chicago Harlan at 5:30.

 

It’s a challenging week ahead for the Fighting Illini as they play two top 10 teams in the next three days. Tonight, Brad Underwood’s team is in East Lansing to take on second-ranked Michigan State.

 

Illinois State junior forward Simone Goods has been named Player and Newcomer of the Week in Missouri Valley women’s basketball. Goods averaged 27 points, 10 rebounds and four steals in two ISU wins.

 

The Chicago Blackhawks fell to the Los Angeles Kings, 3-1. The Hawks have lost nine of their last 10.

 

As Major League Baseball continues to seek ways to speed up the game, there’s been a decision that catchers, coaches or managers can make no more than six visits to the pitcher’s mound per game. MLB decided against a “pitch clock” this year. It would have given the pitcher a certain amount of time (likely 20 seconds) to throw the ball.

 

Team USA captured the bronze medal in ice dancing at the Pyeongchang Games, American Brita Sigourney won bronze in freestyle halfpipe skiing, while the U.S. men’s hockey team has advanced to the quarterfinals with a convincing 5-1 win against Slovakia. Also on the ice, a Slovenian hockey player has become the third athlete to test positive for doping. Norway leads the total medal count with 28, followed by Germany with 20 and Canada with 19. The United States is tied for sixth place with 12.
