With the recent school shootings throughout the nation, the government, law enforcement and the general public are coming up with suggestions daily on how to stop them.
One that seems to have gained popularity is the idea of arming teachers. Mark Jontry, regional superintendent of schools for Livingston, McLean, DeWitt and Logan counties, explains why he doesn’t think that is a solution.
“Obviously everybody is talking about ‘should we arm teachers?’ and things like that. I don’t know if that in and of itself in isolation is a solution. You certainly would have to identify individuals that would be willing to take up that particular type of responsibility and a lot of people wouldn’t be interested in taking up that responsibility, because they would be concerned with the unintended consequences if they ever had to pull the trigger,” Jontry said.
Jontry was a guest on a recent Community Forum, where he talks more about school safety. That can be found at WJEZ.com.
