In high school softball, Pontiac scored a 5-hit shutout win over Metamora, 7-0. Dwight scored an 8-3 home win over Lexington.

 

At the Country Financial 3-point Showdown in Peoria, Pontiac sophomore Carter Dawson and Streator senior Joey Byers are among the 32 competitors in Thursday’s preliminary round.

 

The NCAA Tournament gets underway in earnest today with 16 games will be played today including two No. 1 seeds, Midwest top seed Kansas and East top seed Villanova. Loyola will play Miami on Thursday afternoon in Dallas.

 

In the final two play in games. Syracuse knocked off Arizona State 60-56. Texas Southern scored its first NCAA tournament win, beating North Carolina Central 64-46.

 

Illinois State men’s basketball has reportedly landed a transfer shooting guard next year. Josh Jefferson was a teammate of current Redbird Will Tinsley at Lake Land College in Mattoon. Jefferson set a school record in three-point percentage as a freshman making close to 48 percent from deep.

 

Illinois football is expected to sign a graduate transfer at quarterback. A.J. Bush first attended Nebraska, but never played. He spent last year as a backup at Virginia Tech.

 

Illinois State softball wrapped up its week-long trip to Oklahoma falling to Tulsa, 6-1.

 

The Chicago Bears have signed Chase Daniel to serve as a backup to quarterback Mitch Trubisky. The Bears have released QB Mike Glennon. He’s expected to sign with the Arizona Cardinals.
