Reviewing open burning ordinances in the City of Pontiac

With warmer weather coming soon, open burning ordinances will be a concern for the residents of Pontiac.

Fire Chief Scott Runyon explains what people aren’t allowed to burn.

“Some things you’re not allowed to burn is garbage. There’s no burning leaves and grass in the city. No construction materials or trade waste. Trade waste is if you own a construction or roofing company or something, you can’t burn the remnants of what you bring home with you after a day’s work and burn. Landscape waste is not allowed, as well, because it’s green and puts off really noxious odors,” Runyon said.

He also said it’s a good idea to think of your neighbors before lighting the fire.

“If there’s a wind and its blowing straight at your neighbor’s house, hopefully you don’t need a fire that bad. Think about your neighbors a little bit. We deal with more neighborhood disputes than we do anything when it comes to this. Just be kind,” Runyon said.
