The Chicago Cubs cut down a runner at the plate who tried to score on a wild pitch to end a potential Rockies’ rally in the ninth inning as the Cubs held on to win, 9-7, at Colorado. Slugger Kris Bryant left the game after he took a fastball to the head. The Cubs say tests reveal no concussion, just a cut under one eye.

 

Ex-Illinois State Redbird Paul DeJong’s three-run homer in the seventh inning padded the St. Louis Cardinals’ lead in a  9-2 win over Cincinnati as the Cards sweep their second series in as many weeks against the Reds.

 

The White Sox lost their seventh in a row, 7-1, to Houston. The Astros outscored the Sox 27-2 in the three-game series.

 

Illinois State softball was blanked by Missouri Valley Conference leader Drake, 3-0. The Bulldogs are 18-0 in the league this season.

 

In his home state, Andrew Landry took the Valero Open in San Antonio for this first PGA tour win.
