In high school baseball, Central Catholic won at Pontiac 9-3. The Saints scored seven times in the third inning. Ben Schuler and Eric Watson each had two hits for the Indians.
Track and field action at Gibson City had plenty of Pontiac success. Indians coach Corey Christenson reports 29 personal records from the meet. Sarah Christopher won the 100 and 200; Tristina Einhaus won the 400; Christopher, Einhaus, Sam Sipe and Jamie McKee won the 4×100 relay; Samantha Thoman, Franchesca Smith, Sipe and Lily Lydigsen won the 4×200; McKee won the high jump; Smith won the triple jump; Cameron Dawson won the high jump; Steven Lewis, Brayden Weaver and Peyton Cramer went 1-2-3 in the discus; Ethan Lee, Ethan Schickel, Angelo Borrego and Colton Clesson won the 4×400; and Noah Parra and Paul Giordano went 1-2 in the 1600.
The Cardinals’ five-game winning streak is over as the Twins earned their fourth straight victory with a 6-0 win at Busch Stadium. Fernando Romero struck out nine Cardinals in six shutout innings. The brief series concludes this afternoon at Busch Stadium as Jake Odorizzi heads to the mound for the Twins against the Cardinals’ Carlos Martinez in a match-up of right-handers.
The Cubs ended a five-game skid in a big way with a 14-2 pounding of the Marlins at Wrigley Field. Kyle Hendricks scattered six hits over eight innings and the Cubs supported him with four home runs, including career number 99 from Kris Bryant, one from each side of the plate from Ian Happ and another drive from Javier Baez. The series continues tonight with Jose Urena for the Marlins while the Cubs have yet to determine their starter.
The White Sox took Monday off as they welcome the Pirates tonight at Guaranteed Rate Field. Ivan Nova starts for the Bucs while the Sox hand the ball to Lucas Giolito.
The Sox announced reliever Randy Farquhar has been released from the hospital after treatment for a brain hemorrage from a ruptured aneurysm. Doctors expect him to pitch again but not this year so he can fully recover.
The Cardinals are sending their condolences to the family of former Cardinal outfielder Stephen Piscotty, who’s mother died Sunday night after battling A-L-S, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The Cardinals traded Piscotty to the Oakland A’s in December, mainly to be near his mother, Gretchen. She was 55.
Illinois Wesleyan shortstop Sam Berghoff is the CCIW Softball Player of the Year while sophomore pitcher Ally Wiegand was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year.
