The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive with the National Association of Letter Carriers in the United States is happening Saturday, and people in Pontiac and surrounding communities are asked to have their donations waiting for pick up by post office employees and volunteers in the morning.
Letter Carrier Donna Beyer explains what is happening Saturday.
“The last two years was easiest. We just delivered you a paper bag and you put your groceries in it, we pick it up and we take care of the rest. This year, we don’t have enough paper bags to go around to everyone, but we will try to evenly disburse those and then you will get a little card that will explain what exactly that is all about. Find any bag, any box, anything you would like to put it in, and just set it out by your mailbox or on your porch,” Beyer said.
Retired postal employee Carole Faust describes who all is involved.
“All of the rural carriers will be out, the city carriers and if you want to drop it off at the post office, we’ll be at the back side of the post office. I know Flanagan is doing it, as well. I don’t know for sure what other areas, but I’m sure they’d be glad to take it and drop it off at the food pantries,” Faust said.
Most local post offices are participating in this event, but call ahead to confirm. All items collected go to local food pantries.
