Operation S.A.F.E. is up and running in Livingston County, looking to control the number of feral and barn cats throughout the area.
Treasurer Pat Fox explains the background on the organization.
“Operation S.A.F.E. (S.A.F.E. stands for save animals from euthanasia) is a program we’ve been working with in Livingston County since 2013. We are a low cost spay/neuter program for Livingston County and it’s just been working well in this community and we hope to keep it going,” Fox said.
She explains why it’s important to have a program like it in the county.
“It does keep the pet population down. Some cats can have litter after litter after litter. They actually start breeding in February or March, so they start litters in May or so. But immediately after that, she can get pregnant again. They can have five or six litters a year. If they each have five kittens, that’s an extra thirty cats. That’s just one female cat. So it just helps so you don’t have so many animals running around or getting hit by a car or someone just not caring that they’re there,” Fox said.
