PONTIAC – A local group is inviting the public to participate in a fundraiser this weekend that aims to provide money to help honor veterans.
The Heartland Chapter of ABATE has a ride scheduled for Saturday that will raise money for the Greater Peoria Honor Flight, a program that flies veterans across the country for events. Heartland Chapter of ABATE Vice President Bob Eillinger said people can register prior to 11:30 a.m. when the ride starts. Participants aren’t limited to motorcycles for the event, meaning they can drive or ride whatever vehicle they have available.
“10:30 is when sign up starts. We’ll start a the Pontiac VFW, the ride or whatever vehicle you happen to be in will be going to El Paso, Gridley, Dwight, and Streator,” Ellinger explained. “Streator’s will be at American Legion, but all the rest are VFWs.”
Ellinger said if people can’t make it for the entire ride, they are welcome to catch up to the group and break off at a stop if they need to. Once the ride has ended, participants are welcome to return to Pontiac at 7 p.m. to enjoy a meal with some activities planned.
“The cost is $10 per person whether you’re riding or you’re driving,” said Ellinger. “If you’re coming just for the late events such as the dinner, the prizes, the raffles, and the silent auction, it’s going to cost you $5. All that money goes right to the program.”
The Heartland Chapter of ABATE began making the ride an annual event last year. Two representatives from the Greater Peoria Flight Honor Flight will attend the event to answer any questions about the program.
