PONTIAC – Pontiac District 429 is experiencing a number of renovations in its schools before the kids are back in the classroom this fall.

Speaking with WJEZ’s Todd Wineburner, Superintendent Brian Dukes said the summer months have been filled with projects from new paint jobs, new carpet installation, remodeling some bathrooms, replacing benches and bike racks at the junior high. At Washington, Dukes said part of the roof will be replaced. At Lincoln has received a new paint job and tiles. At Central, a new playground is being built and replacing the gym floor.

Dukes said the end goal is to make sure every student and faculty member of the schools are pleased when they walk in and see the renovations.

“Our ultimate goal is to make sure the kids and the staff are proud to come into a building, they’re comfortable and safe, and that the school colors really represent our school district,” Dukes said.

Dukes noted the district has been operating with older buildings, which make renovation projects a bit more challenging to finance. He explained much of the funds for the various projects are made available due to the sales tax.

“None of this happens without the sales tax we get from our community,” said Dukes. “There’s no possible way these projects take place without that sales tax money that allows us to update our buildings and make them look as nice as possible.”

Dukes also said the district is examining incorporating technology more and more in its schools.
