Illinois held off IUPUI 85-77 on Tuesday night at State Farm Center. Malcolm Hill led the Illini with 32 points, 23 in the second half. The Illini face Central Michigan on Saturday.
Other Big Ten men’s wins went to Minnesota, Michigan, Rutgers, Michigan State and Purdue while Ohio State lost in overtime to Florida Atlantic.
From the Missouri Valley Conference, Wichita State hammered St. Louis and Evansville edged Bowling Green while Bradley fell at Ball State 80-63.
Tonight, Illinois State men’s basketball visits Tulsa in a 7 o’clock contest. The Illinois State women tip at the same time at home tonight against Milwaukee.
In boys high school basketball from Tuesday, Central Catholic bested Pontiac 72-45, Olympia beat Prairie Central 71-63, Ridgeview topped Flanagan-Cornell 49-32, U-High won at IVC 76-56 and Normal Community edged past Pekin 50-45. Eureka defeated Lexington 68-48 for the 500th win for Hornets coach Tim Meiss. Bloomington girls lost to Morton 68-40.
Washington defeated Pontiac 102-77 in a boys swimming dual meet.
The Pistons beat the Bulls 102-91 despite 32 points from Jimmy Butler.
The Blackhawks routed Arizona 4-0. The Blues beat the Canadiens 3-2 in overtime.
Illinois State senior offensive lineman Cameron Lee has been chosen for the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl on January 21 in California. Former Redbird linebacker and current Tennessee Titan Nate Palmer is also on the squad.
The White Sox have traded ace lefty Chris Sale to the Red Sox for four prospects.
The 1994 Heisman Trophy winner and former Chicago Bear Rashaan Salaam has died at the age of 42. He was found yesterday in a park in Boulder, Colorado. His mother says a note was found nearby. Police say they don’t suspect foul play.
