The week between Christmas and New Year is filled with high school holiday basketball tournaments. The 86th Pontiac Holiday Tournament opens Wednesday and the 64-team State Farm Holiday Classic begins at four venues in Bloomington-Normal tomorrow. Today, the Marseilles tournament begins with Flanagan-Cornell facing Serena, Dwight taking on Midland, Woodland vs. Kewanee and Hartsburg-Emden vs. Somonauk.
Illinois State men’s basketball bounced back by scoring the first 16 points and never trailing in a 68-56 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the third place game of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. Paris Lee led the Redbirds with 18 points. Three other Redbirds contributed double-digit scoring, including Deontae Hawkins with 16, Tony Wills with 11 and MiKyle McIntosh with 10. Hawkins was named to the all-tournament team.The Redbirds end non-conference play at 8-4 and open Missouri Valley Conference playon Thursday night at home against Evansville.
The Bulls lost at San Antonio 119-100.
The National Hockey League continues its Christmas break one more day.
Christmas Day NFL action found the Steelers beating the Ravens 31-27 and Chiefs hammering the Broncos 33-10. The 9-5 Detroit Lions visit the 12-2 Dallas Cowboys in the Monday Night NFL game.
