Illinois Wesleyan men ended their season on an emphatic note with a 107-77 win over league-leading Augustana. The Titans end 17-8 and 9-7 in the CCIW. Augustana drops to the third seed and will face North Park on Friday in the CCIW tournament semifinals, with Carthage earning hosting duties with the Number 1 seed and a semifinal against North Central.
The Illinois Wesleyan women fell in their regular season finale at Wheaton 76-67. The Titans have the second seed in this weekend’s CCIW tournament at Wheaton and will face Elmhurst in a semifinal at 5 o’clock Friday, with Wheaton facing Augustana in the second semifinal.
Illinois broke open a close game late for a 66-50 win over Northwestern to sweep the season series, taking advantage of an eight-minute scoring drought by the Wildcats late in the second half. Malcolm Hill led the Illini with 18 points.
Illinois State’s men’s basketball team closes out the home portion of its regular season schedule tonight against Southern Illinois on Senior Night. Tip is at 6 p.m. on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.
On the high school hardwood, U-High girls edged Richwoods 27-26 with a late free throw. The Pioneers will meet Morton in the sectional final in Bartonville tomorrow night.
In boys Class 2A Regional play, In Spring Valley, Justin Fox hit a 25-footer at the horn to send Dwight to a 53-50 win over St. Bede. Central Catholic’s season is over after host GCMS upset the top-seeded Saints 65-45. At Farmington, Olympia defeated El Paso-Gridley 70-36.
Boys Class 1A Regional action found LeRoy advancing on its home court with a 62-43 win over Cornerstone Christian Academy after Decatur Lutheran pounded Blue Ridge in the other contest 86-38.
In boys regular season play, Bloomingon claims the Big 12 title with a 70-43 win over Peoria. Normal West lost a chance to claim a share of the league crown with a 67-58 loss to Champaign Central. Normal Community defeated Danville 59-53.
Jonathan Toews had three goals and two assists to lead the Blackhawks past the Minnesota Wild 5-3.
Major League Baseball and the players’ union have agreed to allow managers to signal an intentional walk from the dugout and eliminate the four pitches. MLB also plans to give the players’ union the required one-year notice to change the strike zone, implement pitch clocks and limit trips to the mound starting in 2018. The union normally has to agree to the changes unless the one-year notice is given.
