In high school softball, Dwight earned a 5-3 win over Fisher in the Class 1A Sectional at LeRoy. The Trojans will play either LeRoy or Heyworth in Saturday’s sectional championship game. Prairie Central softball was leading host Morton 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning when the game was suspended and will resume at 4:30 this afternoon in Morton. Pontiac softball’s regional game against host Peoria Notre Dame was postponed until tonight at 6:30. Central Catholic was eliminated by St. Joseph-Ogden 3-2 in the Class 2A Sectional at Maroa.
U-High girls soccer is headed back to the state finals for the first time in five years after defeating Joliet Catholic 4-1 in the Class 1A Supersectional at LaSalle. U-High plays Johnsburg on Friday afternoon in Naperville in the state semifinals.
Illinois State baseball faces host and top seed Missouri State tonight at 7:30 in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament at Hammons Field. Redbird Owen Miller was named to the Valley second team while teammate John Rave was an honorable mention.
The CornBelters were rained out at Windy City and will play a doubleheader starting at 10:30 in Crestwood.
The Dodgers beat the Cardinals 2-1 on an RBI double by Logan Forsythe in the 13th inning. Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw tossed a wild pitch in the ninth inning to score the tying run. The rematch tonight sends Mike Leake to the mound for the Cardinals against the Dodgers’ Rich Hill.
The Cubs beat the Giants 4-1 with their first complete game of the season, a four-hitter from Jon Lester. Kyle Schwarber recorded the longest home run of his career, a 470-foot bomb which only recently landed on Sheffield Avenue. The series continues tonight at Wrigley Field with Matt Moore on the bump for the Giants against the Cubs’ Kyle Hendricks.
The White Sox lost 5-4 to the Diamondbacks despite the 100th career home run from Jose Abreu. The rematch is this afternoon in Arizona with Jose Quintana starting for the White Sox against Randall Delgado for the Snakes.
The Ottawa Senators have forced a Game 7 in the NHL Eastern Conference Finals, scoring the only third-period goal in a 2-1 over Pittsburgh.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have moved within one win of making a third straight trip to the NBA Finals after taking Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals over Boston 112-99.
